Prometheus, Atheism and Human Origins

The movie Prometheus is one of my favorites and a perfect example of how science fiction can explore big ideas through art. The opening scene when the ‘engineer’ seeds life on a planet through his self sacrifice is one such moment. You can watch it: here and here is a featurette that talks about the issue a bit more.

Does such an idea seem too crazy? Well here’s atheist Richard Dawkins presenting a very similar hypothesis. In a day when debates about origins seems so combative and ugly in many spheres, it’s boldly served up in entertainment with no qualms. It’s like the filmmakers didn’t get the notice that such matters are supposedly taboo or uninteresting to thinking and rational people.
