The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) plans to build a national memorial to victims of lynching in Montgomery, Alabama, which is expected to open in 2018. This memorial project relating to America’s history of racial terror and lynching will become the most ambitious in the nation on this topic.
This is an example of artistic prophetic witness and protest that moves me in ways that violence and ugliness never do. Artists with convictions challenging people to face the truth of the past by calling them to repentance and action in the present. This is a profoundly moving artistic endeavor that brings people together instead of driving them apart. I pray more movements like this take place in the effort to confront and convict while helping and healing America regarding chapters in her past and the ferment of the present.
“Only guard yourself and guard your soul carefully, lest you forget the things your eyes saw, and lest these things depart your heart all the days of your life, and you shall make them known to your children, and your children’s children.”
